MODEC, Inc. ("MODEC") is pleased to announce that one of its floating production storage and offloading vessels (FPSO) has been selected to join the global Lighthouse network, applying technology as a leader in the fourth industrial revolution.

The FPSO Campos dos Goytacazes Tornado MV29, which received the recognition from the World Economic Forum this time, has been deployed in the Tartaruga Verde and Tartaruga Mestia fields in the Campos Basin offshore Brazil. MODEC was responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction, mobilization and installation of the FPSO. MODEC has also been responsible for the operation and maintenance of the FPSO since 2018.

The FPSO Campos dos Goytacazes MV29 cruiser is the only offshore facility recognized by the global Lighthouse network. This is also the first time that the network includes facilities in Latin America and those operated by Japanese companies.

The FPSO Campos dos Goytacazes Tornado MV29, which was selected as a Lighthouse for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is a response to a fleet digitalization project and a radical change management of cultural and operational excellence, which was developed by MODEC in response to its rapid development in Brazil. Today, the company has 10 operating vessels in Brazil and another four (4) under construction. Globally, the company has one of the largest fleets in the sector, with 17 vessels, operating across Africa, Asia and Oceania.

Digitalization allows the company to better integrate, making operations safer and more efficient. With more than 10,000 sensors installed on each of its vessels, MODEC leverages Advanced Analytics for predictive maintenance, the digital twin of its process plants and a proprietary data platform to facilitate the development and deployment of new algorithms, resulting in increased production. For example, these technologies have enabled the FPSO Campade do Campos dos Goytacazes MV29 to reduce downtime by 65% from the start of production, making the facility a leader in the industry.

“We have a huge amount of data from our operations in Brazil, and with digital tools we can anticipate problems and ensure we operate safely and stably,” explains Soichi Ide, MODEC Group Chief Digital Officer and Vice President of Latin America and Ghana operations. “Processing this data has brought clear advances to MODEC’s operations, such as the use of machine learning for predictive maintenance of equipment and early identification of problems in our processing plants. This is possible thanks to the digital empowerment of personnel on the platform as well as the support teams on shore.”

The recognition by the World Economic Forum strengthens Brazil’s position in the world energy market as a high-tech reference in the offshore sector. Today, the country is in the spotlight of the sector due to its prospects for the coming years. According to the National Petroleum Corporation (ANP), Brazil’s total daily oil and gas production exceeded 3.5 million barrels in 2019. According to MODEC’s forecasts, the country will need 20-30 new floating platforms in the next four (4) years.

"This recognition is a testament to MODEC's long history of commitment to Brazil and to our oil and gas production customers," said Yuji Kozai, MODEC President and CEO. "We understand that adopting disruptive technologies and embracing new ways of doing things to improve our operations is essential to cope with the strong demand projected in the coming years. We also believe that digitalization is a key driver to consolidate one of our important businesses. Pursuing a strategy to maximize value with our stakeholders throughout the lifecycle of each production facility, from engineering to operations, we want MODEC to be a reference and help the oil and gas industry take the next step in the digital transformation process."
